Remarks (public):Isolates 529 and 629 are distinguished primarily by the lack of clamp connections in the former, and the lack of a tyrosinase reaction in the latter; however, Boidin, Terra and Lanquetin (1968) reported tyrosinase in Aleurocystidiellum disciforme, and it is possible that isolate 629 lost this ability through prolonged culture.
Description type:Culture description
Description:Aleurodiscus disciformis (DC.: Fr.) Pat.
Isolate code: 1.3c.(26).31c.32.36.38.47.(53).54.
Growth on MEA: Very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Margins even, appressed, fimbriate to wispy, hyaline. Aerial mycelium present. Mat at 2 wk sparse, low and thin, silky to cottony, at 6 wk silky to woolly, zonate or azonate, hyaline to white. Reverse at 2 wk unchanged, at 6 wk unchanged. Not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour +, "other" (nondescript or fungoid).
Microscopic characters: Marginal hyphae tubular, straight, thin-walled, 1-2.5(-4) µm broad, with simple to looping clamp connections, sparsely and dichotomously branched. Branching not associated with septa or clamp connections. Cultures monomitic, generative hyphae in older mat remaining thin-walled, tubular, undifferentiated, smooth, inamyloid, 1-5.2 µm broad, with simple to looping clamp connections. Crystals present among aerial hyphae, chunky to tetrahedral, 1.8-23.5 µm broad, single. Submerged hyphae predominantly tubular, inamyloid, 1-3.5(-5) µm broad, with simple to looping clamp connections, thinwalled, with tortuous-branched hyphae 1-3.5 µm broad and with rounded intercalary swellings 4-6.5 µm broad. Conidia lacking.
Growth on PDA: Very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Margins even, appressed, fimbriate, hyaline. Aerial mycelium present. Mat at 2 wk moderate, low and thin, cottony, at 6 wk woolly, azonate. Mat hyaline to white. Reverse at 2 wk unchanged to coloured, yellow (to 4½A3), at 6 wk coloured, pale yellow (4B3½). Not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour +, "antiseptic" (nondescript or poo1-water).
Growth on ML: Very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Margins even, appressed, fimbriate to wispy, hyaline. Aerial mycelium present. Mat at 2 wk sparse, low and thin, silky to cottony, at 6 wk silky to woolly, azonate. Mat hyaline to white to cream (4AB2 at 6 wk). Reverse at 2 wk unchanged to coloured, pale yellow (4A3), at 6 wk (4½A3). Not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour +, "other" (peanut butter, or with heady volatile).
Growing on angiosperms (including Quercus). Heterothallic, tetrapolar (Boidin, Terra and Lanquetin 1968).
Isolate studied: T-629.
